A new phenomenon has hit the Finnish electricity market – Here’s how to take advantage of it and save a lot of money

Electricity is typically cheapest early in the morning and late at night, but now the situation has changed. This summer, electricity has been cheaper more often than before at noon, i.e. when the temperature is at its highest, the Helsinki energy company Helen says in his announcement.

According to Helen, the increase in solar power production in Finland explains the change.

Solar power is produced the most in the summer season, and production is naturally focused on the middle of the day, when the sun’s radiation is strongest.

In this case, plenty of electricity can be produced with solar energy, which lowers the price of electricity.

In this way, the consumer can benefit from the change

In particular, users of exchange electricity can take advantage of the situation by timing electricity consumption in a new way, says Helen’s director responsible for consumer customers Eliisa Puska in the bulletin.

“Many people prefer a stock exchange electricity contract in the summer, when the change is advantageous for the consumer in the heat. You can schedule, for example, cooling for the hottest noon, when electricity is readily available and the price is lower.”

However, electrical devices in use can also heat the apartment.

“High-powered household appliances such as ovens, stoves and, for example, laundry produce heat when they are running. That’s why, for example, it can be profitable to schedule household chores outside of hot days.”
