Car registrations in Europe, Acea: +13.6% in June, +5.7% in the 1st half of the year

Registrations of new cars inEuropean Union have increased by 13,6% on an annual basis in June and on 5,7% in the first half of the year, driven by electric vehicles. He notices it l’Acea (European Automobile Manufacturers Association).

Overall, they were almost sold in the first six months of the year 5.9 million of new cars, despite a geopolitical context unfavorable which weighs on the prospects, Acea underlined in the press release.

The car market

“The market continues to benefit from strong demand of electric vehicles, fueled mainly by support measures” for these technologies, added the association. In the first six months of the year, this increase affected all types of electric vehicles, whether they were completely electrical (+40.5% compared to the first half of 2025), ibridi plug-in (+22,5%) o non-plug-in hybrids (+13.2%). However, in the January-June period, non-plug-in hybrid cars remained the models most popular among them Europeanswith a market share of 37.3%. Motorized vehicles follow internal combustion– petrol and diesel – which continue their decline but still represent 29.7% of the market share (compared to 37.8% the previous year). The cars completely electric follow an opposite trajectory, with their market share increasing from 15.6% in H1 2025 to 20.7% in H1 2026.

Thanks to this positive momentum, in the first six months of the yearthe order of magnitude of new car sales is comparable for fully electric vehicles (1.2 million) and gasoline-powered cars (1.3 million).

The photography of Europe

Three countries alone accounted for almost two thirds of new registrations of electric cars, with a strong sales growth: France (+62.9%), Germany (+48%) and Denmark (+41.2%). It is in France that the decline in sales of new petrol cars is been more marked (-34.2%), although the downward trend is also significant in other important markets such as Spain (-18.5%), Germany (-18.2%) and Italy (-17.1%).

The main producers

Even in the first half of the year, the manufacturer ranking remains dominated by Volkswagen, which holds 26.5% of the market share and recorded a 2.6% increase in sales volume, driven by brands Skoda e Audi. Stellar ranks second with a market share of 16.4% and sales growing by 6% thanks to Fiat e Opel. Renault, in third place, it saw its market share fall to 10.5% from the first half of 2025 and its sales fell by 4.2% over the same period. Several Chinese groups, despite maintaining a very small market share (less than 3%), have recorded a real explosion in sales on an annual basis. This is the case, for example, of Byd, which more than doubled its sales, by Chery, which almost quadrupled them, and of Leap motor (Stellantis partner), which has increased them more than sixfold.
