Acapulco, Gro., The federal government plans to advance part of its energy transition plans by at least 10 years. According to the Undersecretary of Planning and Energy Transition of the Ministry of Energy (Sener), Jorge Islas Samperio, it is intended that in 2040, and not in 2050 as originally formulated in official documents, 50 percent of the energy produced in the country will be from a clean source, particularly renewable.
“This clean energy goal that we are proposing for 2030, we want 38 percent of the energy produced in the country to be clean, especially renewable. If we go further, towards 2039, 2040, we want this figure to increase to at least 50 percent,” said the official during his presentation at the forum of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Mexico Section, which takes place in this city.
The goal of 38 percent of clean energy production by 2030 had already been reiterated by sector authorities. The 50 was officially proposed until 2050, according to the Transition Strategy to Promote the Use of Cleaner Technologies and Fuels, published in 2024.
The new administration’s goal during the six-year term is to push projects for 32 thousand megawatts of new capacity, of which more than 70 percent will correspond to renewable energy. “This means that the energy transition is going to be very deep, very accelerated,” he assured.
“This is a historic effort that will reduce the consumption and import of natural gas, strengthen energy sovereignty and generate benefits for the people of Mexico,” Islas Samperio reiterated in front of the union of electronic and electronic engineers convened in the industrial sector, academia and public service.
Likewise, one of the main transversal goals is to achieve universal access to electricity in 2030 and, as part of that objective, investment in transmission and distribution is equivalent to approximately 10 billion dollars.
“It is not only about increasing the energy supply and making an energy transition, but it must be accompanied by an improvement, modernization, strengthening of the transmission and distribution networks, as well as the integration of a significant number of storage systems,” Islas Samperio pointed out.
