La Jornada: Expansion of the port area of ​​Isla Mujeres is made official

The secretariats of the Mexican Navy (Semar) and Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) issued an agreement that modifies the expansion of the port area of ​​Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, which will go from 68,526 square meters to 614,707.

For this expansion, it is explained that Raymundo Morales Ángeles, head of Semar, presented the proposal to the head of Semarnat, by which the Navy is authorized to have control of port operations and constructions.

The expansion aims to “satisfy the needs of port operations and deep-sea, cabotage and offshore maritime transportation, since it is of public interest to generate good communication by and for maritime transportation, coupled with the great demand in said area.”

Likewise, it points out that the buildings and facilities owned by individuals will be “permanently attached to the assets of the public domain of the Federation, will be affected by the port area and will pass to the domain of the nation, at the end of the validity of the concession titles”, in accordance with the provisions of articles 36 of the Ports Law and 61 of the regulations for the use and exploitation of the territorial sea, navigable waterways, beaches, federal maritime land zone and land reclaimed from the sea.

In this way, “the concessions, permits and authorizations granted to third parties prior to the entry into force of this agreement will continue to have their effects in the terms and conditions entered into until the conclusion of its validity.”
