Canada has announced the imposition of retaliatory tariffs on US goods, with rates ranging between 15% and 50%, marking an intensification of the trade war between the two historic allies.
Ottawa’s retaliatory measures will come into force on September 8 – a timing previously indicated – following the introduction of 50% US tariffs on Canadian products on Saturday.
Canadian authorities have announced a $5.4 billion aid package for businesses and workers affected by new tariffs imposed by the US on Canadian goods.
Trump’s words on Canada
Canada is a “difficult and unreasonable” country that has “ripped off” the United States for decades. Donald Trump returns to the attack on his neighbor and, in a post on Truth, accuses him of having “imposed customs duties of 400% and more on our farmers”, of having “brought many excellent US companies into ruin” and of having refused “for 10 years to certify Gulfstream jets” in favor of the competing Canadian aircraft (Bombardier’s Learjet family, ed.), until I intervened”.
“I work with many countries and Canada is undoubtedly the most difficult and unreasonable. They feel they have the right to do what they want, but they are not a state (of the USA, ed.) and will no longer be one” concludes Trump.
The American president also said he is “seriously considering” changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. He announced it on the Truth social network. The reason for the change would be dictated by the fact that the United States “will no longer have much to do with Ontario”. The dispute is part of the ongoing trade war between the United States and Canada.
