La Jornada: The country’s export boom depends on Asian inputs

In the first seven months of the year, non-automotive manufacturing exports rose 42.2 percent annually and imports of non-oil intermediate goods rose 32.5 percent annually.

Economic analysts estimate that Mexico is importing all inputs for electrical components, machinery, electrical equipment and appliances, among others, from Asian countries and exporting, with a slight change, to the United States. Mexico, being an assembly economy rather than a producer, registers a rebound in imports of intermediate goods, which indicates that companies are preparing for assembly and export to the United States.

According to data from Gabriela Siller, director of analysis at Grupo Financiero Base, imports from Taiwan alone rose 200.53 percent in the year (42.73 percent of the growth in total purchases), while Vietnam reported an increase of 103.21 percent and represent 13.63 percent.

Between January and July 2026, merchandise destined for the United States increased 29.5 percent annually (49.8 percent in July), driven by the non-automotive category (43.6 percent annually), while the automotive sector continued to decline (1.8 percent annually). The United States concentrated 84.5 percent of non-oil shipments during the first seven months of the year.

Alejandro Gómez, general director of the Group of Advisors in Economics and Public Administration, assured: “exports can grow in the double digits, while the economy barely grows 1.2 percent, since the important thing is how much value is added within Mexico.”
