What Kun Agüero said about taxes in Argentina and why he was supported by economists

Away from soccer, Sergio “Kun” Agüero became an expert “streamer” and this time he used his account on the Twitch platform to refer to taxes, especially those related to assets and wealth, which are charged in countries like Argentina. The position of the former Manchester City quickly became viral.

“You know what heritage is, right? Heritage is all you have in the world. There are countries that have money in your account or in any part of the world to you they charge you. Annual. They charge you, ok?”, began the striker to explain what happens in different countries. He pointed out that the states that charge this type of tax fall into double taxation.

“If you already pay taxes, then you have several countries that do not charge you,” continued the player: “If you have income, clearly it is because you are working and you are doing well. So nothing happens if you pay by income. You pay 30%, 35%, 50%. In England you pay 50%, for example. Do you understand? But you are generating money, so if you are generating money it is fine, you pay, ”she added.

What does not convince me is, let’s say, that you pay an annual percentage of the assets that you have. It seems to me that it is crazy anywhere in the world. That there are places, a lot of countries, where it seems that if you are already paying the income, why do they keep taking more money from you? Do you understand? If you all your life generated money and paid income, paid taxes, why do you have to keep paying more?

Agüero’s position generated reactions that went beyond the 4 million users who follow him on Twitch and was echoed in other social networks. On twitter, the former Minister of Economy, Ricardo Lopez Murphy affirmed :“What it says Sergio Aguero is impeccable and that is exactly what Argentina needs to change. The State must stop plundering taxpayers with taxes. It is the only possible way for there to be more investment, more production and more growth.”

A similar reaction had the legislator of Libertad Avanza and also youtuber, Ramiro Marra, who wrote: “I am fascinated that people are waking up and protesting against the crazy taxes we pay. In the end, the state seems to be punishing you for working and being successful. They punish effort and reward laziness, that’s why there are people defending it”.

Even the Secretary of Tax Policy of the Ministry of Economy of the Nation, Roberto Arias, took advantage of Kun’s words to say: “In several European countries, the Profit rates are much higher than in Argentina, although they do not have a tax. to Personal Assets (they do pay high taxes on real estate and automobiles)”.

Arias expressed himself in several tweets and took the opportunity to defend the current tax system in Argentina: “A wealth tax is a good complement to income taxes, because very rich people have many ways to evade/avoid the latter. Perhaps it is not the case of a soccer player, but the tax laws are general”.

Guzmán’s man was dispatched: “Another issue raised by the Kun is that of double taxation: it is necessary to improve and expand the agreements to avoid international double taxation, although this does not resolve that within a country an income is then taxed as heritage , which is for a wide debate.”
