Federal government debt reaches 500 billion euros for the first time

The net federal government debt rose to 500.534 billion euros at the end of March. This is reported by the Debt Agency. It is the first time that federal debt has exceeded half a trillion.

In gross terms, the federal government debt has previously exceeded the 500 billion mark, but that gross amount takes into account, among other things, investments. If we look purely at debt, it is the first time that the figure of 500 billion has been reached, confirms Jean Deboutte, director of the Debt Agency. In March alone, 8.10 billion euros in debt was added.

According to Deboutte, the increase is going as planned. In 2024, the federal government debt is expected to increase by 21.5 billion euros. Last year that increase amounted to 27.4 billion euros.

By the way, this is purely about the federal government debt. The debts of all governments in our country together have already exceeded the 600 billion euro mark.
