Preliminary plans announced: This is how hydrogen would be transferred from north to south in Finland

The national hydrogen transmission network enables the creation of a hydrogen market in Finland.

Gas transmission network company Gas grid has published a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network. The company’s goal is to develop a hydrogen infrastructure that meets the operators’ needs and an open hydrogen market by the beginning of the 2030s.

The preliminary route plans are based on the market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023.

“At the moment, the vast majority of published wind power projects are located on the west coast of Finland, and a large part of Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions are generated in southern Finland, which means that the hydrogen transmission network will be built mainly in the coastal area in the first phase,” says the director responsible for hydrogen development Sara Kärki in the bulletin.

“Potential areas for the development of the hydrogen transmission network in the future are eastern, central and northern Finland, where new wind or solar power production can be created.”

Gasgrid will be able to start mapping concrete route alternatives during the spring of 2024.

“Feedback on the route alternatives is collected to support the further planning of the routes also from companies and project developers participating in the development of the hydrogen economy, head of the unit responsible for hydrogen valley development Heli Virkki says.
