Urso warns Stellantis: "Without Gigafactory in Termoli, we will move the PNRR resources elsewhere"

Carlos Tavares CEO of Stellantis“had asked us two things” namely “to overcome the restrictions of the Euro 7 regulation and to start an incentive plan: we have done both things”, so “the government has done its part and Stellantis has not” therefore “if it does not respond positively and quickly” on the Gigafactory a Termoli in Molise, “we will divert the PNRR resources” destined for the project elsewhere. This was stated by the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, speaking at the meeting in Rimini, Adolfo Urso.

“I expect Stellantis, Fiat’s heir, to take on the leading role in the relaunch of the Italian car industry,” the minister continued, “if the remuneration of CEOs, management or the dividends of large companies were measured not only by profits but also by the social sustainability they contribute to achieving, we would probably have a solution to our problems. For this reason, I hoped that Carlos Tavares will also be invited to this Meeting next year, to understand our conception of the company as a social enterprise, which is also codified in our constitutional charter.”

The company’s response

As for ACC for Termoli, “it is currently enhancing the Gigafactory project, in addition to the one in Germany, in order to introduce a new technology for the production of cells and modules, in order to be in line with the evolution of the market. On the Stellantis side, several decisions have been taken to increase the workload of hybrid components in Termoli”, reads a note from Stellantis.

“With reference to today’s statements, which follow the numerous ones of the past few days, Stellantis remains focused on the execution of the plan for Italy for the coming years, already communicated to the union partners, which includes important projects such as the one for Mirafiori 2030”, the Stellantis note reads, “our goal – it adds – is to work together with all stakeholders to address the main impacts of electrification and growing competition in the context of a European market that is well below pre-pandemic levels and that will not allow production to return to growth immediately as our industry is facing globally in Europe”.

“It is essential that all players in the value chain – including the Government – contribute to creating the right conditions for competitiveness, market dynamics and also for tranquility, which are essential to achieve the epochal transition that mobility is experiencing”, concludes Stellantis.

Sbarra (Cisl): 25 thousand workers at risk

“In the first half of 2024, the Stellantis group’s vehicle production decreased by 25% compared to 2023. Concerns are being reported in almost all Italian factories, in some of which the redundancy fund is expiring and if we do not intervene with legislative provisions aimed at extending it, in 2025 we risk losing around 25,000 jobs”, says the general secretary of the Cisl, Luigi Sbarra, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the CL meeting underway in Rimini.

“There are difficulties in Melfi, where Stellantis has announced five new models, but before this happens some time will pass. And I repeat, in 2025 the redundancy fund will expire. We have no news about the Gigafactory investment in Termoli, Mirafiori is a bloodbath, that plant that is remembered as being the automotive capital in our country, is experiencing a period of great concern, of great production and employment uncertainty. The same thing can be said for the Cassino and Pomigliano plants”, he underlines.
