The short film ‘Montecarlo 67’, directed by Rubén Guindo Nova, has become the great winner of the tenth edition of the Fugaz Awards, the main recognitions for Spanish short films, after obtaining a total of eight awards at the gala held this Monday in Room 25 of the Kinépolis Ciudad de la Imagen cinemas, in Madrid.

With this result, the work stands as the most awarded short film in the history of the Fugaz, surpassing ‘Stanbrook’, which in 2021 won seven awards. Among the awards won are Best Short Film, Best Direction, Best Male Performance for Carlos Santos, Production Direction, Photography Direction, Art Direction, Costumes and Makeup and Hairstyling.

The gala, which brought together around a thousand attendees including audiovisual professionals and institutions, recognized the winners of 21 categories in an especially significant edition for the tenth anniversary of these awards.

‘Montecarlo 67’ reconstructs in a fictional way the meeting at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 1967 between Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, Pilar Miró and a young Steven Spielberg, from the moment in which the former received the award for best script for ‘El asfalto’, from ‘Historias para no corazón’. The short film transforms this episode into a comedy about vocation, recognition and camaraderie in the audiovisual industry.

Among the rest of the winners, ‘In memoriam’, ‘Señuelo’ and ‘Chicken Jazz’ have won two awards each. The award for Best Screenplay went to ‘In memoriam’, by Teresa Bellón and César F. Calvillo, while Cristina Soria was awarded Best Female Performance for this same work.

‘Señuelo’ has won the awards for Best New Direction for Martha García Ayerbe and Best Visual Effects for Laura Pedro, while ‘Chicken Jazz’ has been recognized for Best Sound and Best Soundtrack.

In the format categories, ‘The Phantom of the Fifth’ has been chosen as Best Animated Short Film, ‘April, Hoy No Es Winter’ as Best Documentary Short Film and ‘Baile con la muerte’ as Best Short Short Film. The award for Best Latin American Short Film went to ‘La Barbarie’ (Mexico), while ‘Los bats have abandoned the bell tower’ was awarded as Best School Short Film. The feature film ‘Sorda’ has received the award for Best Feature Film.

The actor and ventriloquist Jaime Figueroa has repeated as master of ceremonies of a gala that has been attended by figures such as Toni Acosta, Laura Galán, Mabel Lozano, Luisa Gavasa, Carlos Santos, Mariano Venancio, Álex O’Dogherty, Sofía Otero and Luis Larrodera, among others, as well as representatives of the ICAA, the AECID and the Community of Madrid.

The Fugaz de Honor Award has been awarded to Álex de la Iglesia in recognition of his career, which began with the short film ‘Mirindas Assassinas’, and established him as one of the most influential in contemporary Spanish cinema for his style marked by genre, satire and black humour.

“Turning 10 years allows us to look back and see to what extent the Spanish short film has changed, grown and gained ambition. Los Fugaz was born to give the short the place it deserved within the industry, not as a previous step or as a secondary category, but as a form of cinema with its own language, risk and an enormous capacity to detect where our audiovisual is moving. This edition once again demonstrates that the short film not only discovers talent, but also concentrates some of the freest, most precise and of our cinema,” said Samuel Rodríguez, co-director of CortoEspaña, the organization organizing the awards.
