Important literary award: Author Wunnicke wins Georg Büchner Prize 2026

The Writer Christine Wunnicke is the Georg Büchner Prize winner 2026. This was announced by the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt.

“The German Academy for Language and Poetry awards the Georg Büchner Prize 2026 to Christine Wunnicke for her always surprising and confidently conceived narrative workwhich is set in locations as diverse as Hollywood, Nagasaki or Paris,” the jury said in its statement.

According to a spokeswoman for the academy, the award ceremony will take place on October 24th at the State Theater in Darmstadt. The prize, which has been awarded since 1951 and is endowed with 50,000 euros, is one of the most important literary awards in German-speaking countries.

Well-known names among the award winners

The academy awards the prize to writers who write in German. The award winners must “stand out in a special way through their works and creations” and “have a significant role in shaping contemporary German cultural life,” according to the statutes. The prize is financed by the federal government, the state of Hesse and the city of Darmstadt.

Previous winners include Max Frisch (1958), Günter Grass (1965) and Heinrich Böll (1967) as well as most recently Terézia Mora, Lukas Bärfuss, Elke Erb, Clemens J. Setz, Oswald Egger and Ursula Krechel. It is named after the playwright and revolutionary Georg Büchner (“Woyzeck”). He was born in the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1813 and died in Zurich in 1837.
