La Jornada: Gustavo Dudamel gives a concert date for Venezuela

The orchestra director Gustavo Dudamel announced the date of the concert that he announced a week ago, in order to raise funds to support those affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela. The performance will take place on August 23, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil), at the Hollywood Bowl.

The Venezuelan musician explained that the show is an invitation to transform people’s compassion into actions. “Venezuela will always be my home. My thoughts are, at every moment, with the families whose lives have been changed forever due to this tragedy. The pain is immense, but so is the strength and resilience of our people.”

He recalled that he collaborates with the United Nations Development Program and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, in order to guarantee that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most. “Every person who joins us and every contribution is a reminder that Venezuelans are not alone. Together, with the support of music, generosity and hope, we can help heal and rebuild our country.”

For his part, Kim Noltemy, president and director of the LA Phil, pointed out that the responsibility of the institution he represents goes beyond the stage, which is why they are happy to accompany Dudamel. “We are grateful for the opportunity to directly support relief efforts with a donation of $50,000.”

This performance is Dudamel’s last as director of the LA Phil, and he replaces Celebrating Gustavo at the Bowl, announced in February. In addition, the musician will participate in the closing of the Soccer World Cup, on July 19 in New York, along with Shakira, Justin Bieber, Madonna, BTS, Coldplay, the PS 22 choir and the Muppets.
