Diva is fighting for her career – Ekstra Bladet
Mary J. Blige warms up for the Super Bowl with lukewarm album that does not send her back to the throne

The Super Bowl is not just one of the world’s biggest sporting events, it’s also one of the biggest showcases for stars appearing in the match’s legendary break show.

The night between Sunday and Monday Danish time it is Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre and Mary J. Blige, who are in charge of the entertainment, and the latter are taking advantage of the massive attention to kickstart a cramped career with their first album in five years, ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’.

At least she’s trying. It does not succeed.

– All hail to the queen, Mary J. Blige! it sounds like added compressor horn on supergroovy ‘Amazing’, but the number is among the few that moves her closer to the throne.

In front of the queue are, among others, Beyoncé, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and you could go on.

Chronic love sickness
At the age of 51, Blige delivers more of what she’s always delivered, and it’s not bad so far, it’s just not good enough to make a difference 30 years after she broke through irresistibly with her debut ‘What’s the 411 ? ‘.

A romantic ballad like ‘Love Will Never’ has the chronic love-sick diva made so many times before so much better, but the attitude does not fail anything on strutting ‘On Top’, where the New Yorker proves she does not surrender voluntarily.

There is still power in her vocals, which, however, to some extent are left in the lurch by rather stereotypical productions from Bongo ByTheWay, Cool & Dre and D’Mile, which hold the main character back.

With a playing time of 38 minutes, ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ is Blige’s shortest album, and several of her 1990s bestsellers were almost twice as long, but it’s plenty to note that time has run out from’ The Queen of Hip Hop Soul ‘.

She needs to grab a ‘hail Mary’ on Sunday.
