An art museum employee was fired after hanging his own work on display – Kulttuuri

An employee belonging to the museum’s technology department had hung his own painting on the museum’s wall in hopes of an artistic breakthrough.

The fired employee is said to be a 51-year-old man from the museum’s technology department who describes himself as a freelance artist. The man had had access to the museum space outside of opening hours and the guards had not paid attention when he had hung his work in one of the corridors.

According to the local police, the man had hoped that hanging the painting would lead to his artistic breakthrough.

On unclear, how long the extra work of art had time to hang in the museum. The hanging is said to have already taken place on February 23, but the matter was only announced on Monday, April 8.

However, a spokesman for the Pinakothek told Süddeutsche Zeitung that the painting has probably only been on the wall for a short time, as the curators notice the changes right away.

The subject or style of the man’s artwork has not been released, but it is said to be 60 by 120 centimeters in size.

Police is investigating the matter as an act of damage, because the man had drilled two holes in the wall of the art museum in order to hang his painting.

In addition to the dismissal, the Pinakothek der Moderne has banned the man from entering the museum.
