Culture secures 16.7 million works for exhibition at the commemorative events of the death of Luis Tristan

The Ministry of Culture has assured in 16.7 million euros to eight works for display in the temporary exhibition ‘Tristán: between the divine and the human’, in the Museo del Greco in Toledo. The exhibition is part of the commemorative events of the fourth centenary of the death of Luis Tristán, considered the best disciple of El Greco, which will be held in the second half of the year.

The eight works secured by the Ministry of Culture are lent by the Parish of San Nicolás de Bari in Toledo, which will contribute El Greco’s work ‘Santiago el Mayor’ to the exhibition; the parish of Santa María la Mayor in Talavera de la Reina will give Luis Tristán’s painting ‘San José’ to the exhibition; From the primate chapter of the Toledo cathedral, ‘San Sebastian’, also by Luis Tristán, will be exhibited, and from the convent of Santa Isabel de los Reyes de Toledo, ‘San Miguel Arcángel’, also from Tristán.

For its part, the Jerónimas de San Pablo convent will contribute to the exhibition with the temporary loan of the work ‘Saint Jerome in his study’ and The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge will loan the ‘Adoration of the Shepherds’, also the work of the disciple of the Greek. Likewise, ‘The imposition of the chasuble on Saint Ildefonso’ and ‘Assumption of the Virgin’, which have also been secured by the Ministry, are owned by private collectors.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture has secured 15 million euros for the work ‘Cornelis van der Geest’s Kunstkammer in Antwerp during the visit of the Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella in 1615’ by Willem van Haecht, for display in the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of the Prado.
