Verónica Sánchez stars in ‘Ángela’, a thriller about abuse narrated “with empathy” through the eyes of the victim

It is Sunday, July 14 Atresplayer premieres ‘Angela’,Spanish adaptation of the British thriller ‘Angela Black’. The series, starring Veronica Sanchez, tells the story of a woman who tries to unmask the true face of an abusive husband. The fiction, which will also premiere soon in prime time on Antena 3, addressing the terrible phenomenon of gender-based violence but, the actress stresses, without ever falling into morbidity and recounting the case through the eyes of the victim.

I think our profession, more than anything else, raises questions and through empathy for the characters that you are watching, perhaps we make personal experiences that seem impersonal,” explains the interpreter in an interview with Europa Press. Sánchez accepts that “fiction can be a great mirror of ourselves” but warns that we must ““always think of things in a small way, that is, not wanting to take on more than we can handle.” And abuse is precisely a reality that the actress points out as being unmanageable.

“We are a fiction that tells a very specific story. I give life to this character who is living these circumstances… If we want to do something to reflect the violence that women suffer, I think it is too big, it is not manageable, and that we would be giving ourselves too much importance. We tell something small and we bring it to life with the greatest honesty we can. And I hope it raises questions,” he clarifies.

In describing her character, Sanchez makes it clear that Angela was “a successful, strong, triumphant woman,” so that people do not mistakenly think that this is the journey of a woman without any kind of power. “Angela had her power. Her husband managed to steal it from her and what she has to do is get it back, not find it where it never was, but get it back because he has managed to convince her that it is worth absolutely nothing,” move forward.

“Her husband makes sure she doesn’t see her mother very often, that she fights with her best friend… He manages to isolate her and at the same time, he manages to project an image of a winner and a perfect husband. and of her as a weak and unstable woman“So she has believed it so much that she allows physical abuse, because if he is not there, she is nobody,” reflects Sánchez, delving into the psychology of her character.

A CHARACTER WHO DOUBTS WHAT IS REAL

The actress explains that Angela “first has to trust that what she is seeing is real and then she has to convince others.”This character begins to slip and no longer knows if what is happening is only in her head, because there are many people convincing her that what she says is not true.“, Add.

Although the series is based on an existing thriller, it differs from it in several ways.“Obviously the director has made other decisions. Perhaps our most differentiating point from the original series is that everything is told from Angela’s point of view,” says Sánchez. In this sense, the interpreter emphasizes that there comes a time when the narrator becomes unreliable.

Sánchez describes her character’s doubts as a “journey into madness” and notes that director Tito López-Amado defines it as “a journey into the fragility of the mind.” The actress says that this aspect, “understand how fragile, vulnerable and malleable we can be,” It’s something he particularly likes about fiction.

On the other hand, a notable aspect of ‘Angela Black’ was that the physical violence occurred off-screen, but in the case of the Spanish adaptation, since “the camera is always Angela’s eyes,” the abuse is seen.If you are going to live it like she lives it,” The actress confirms, pointing out that this does not mean that it is morbid.

‘Ángela’ is made up of six 50-minute episodes that will arrive on Atresplayer before its prime time premiere on Antena 3Sonia Martínez and Borja Echeverría are the executive producers of the series, Montse García is the fiction director for Atresmedia and Tito López-Amado, the director.
