Does exercise before bed help you fall asleep?
The war is just one of the reasons that keep the Israelis from sleeping. A new study published by researchers from New Zealand, examined what can help us in such situations. The study found that exercise in the evening can help you fall asleep better and improve the quality of sleep. Dr. Amit Green, an expert psychologist from the sleep system of Asuta Medical Centers explains: “Physical activity is good for the body and mind, and now it turns out that physical activity carried out specifically in the evening can help you fall asleep better.”

According to him, not only does the activity contribute to physical fitness and general health, but it also contributes to a better feeling and mental well-being, which actually helps us fall asleep. “Physical activity has a similar value to meditation in terms of mental health – it helps us disconnect from all noises and stimuli and focus on ourselves for half an hour to an hour. This is especially important for anyone who works in office jobs of a ‘sedentary’ nature.

He clarifies that this refers to any type of preferred sports activity: walking, pilates, yoga, swimming or running. Also, the doctor notes that it is recommended to exercise three times a week and best of all – every day.

Despite this, he qualifies and clarifies that one should not perform an activity with too much intensity close to sleep. “It is important to choose an activity that raises the heart rate moderately, and to do it about two hours before going to bed.”
