Migraines worsen in patients during dust storms in Israel

Scientists from Ben-Gurion University have confirmed the connection between air pollution, including during Sharava (desert wind – editor’s note)and the frequency of seeking medical help for acute migraine attacks.

The work, published in the journal Neurology, is based on an analysis of data from more than 7 thousand patients in Israel over a ten-year period.

The researchers compared schedules of clinic visits and purchases of specific medications (triptans) with indicators of air cleanliness and weather conditions. It turned out that on days with increased concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and fine particles, the risk of hospitalization increases significantly. For example, the number of requests increases when Sharav begins in Israel. Short-term exposure to high doses of NO2 from transport also increases the likelihood of seeking medical attention by 41%.

Climatic factors play an important role and can enhance the effects of pollutants. Heat and dryness exacerbate the effects of nitrogen dioxide, while cold and wet weather makes PM2.5 particles more dangerous. This data can help doctors better predict periods of increased stress on the healthcare system and provide patients with precise recommendations for protection during unfavorable days.

“These findings help us better understand how and when migraine attacks occur,” said co-author Dr. Ido Peles. “For people with a predisposition to migraine, environmental factors may play two roles: medium-term factors such as heat and humidity may alter the risk of attacks, while short-term factors such as sudden changes in pollution levels, such as sharav, may serve as triggers for attacks.”

According to the authors, in the context of global climate change, accompanied by more frequent heat waves and dust storms, doctors should consider environmental risks when drawing up treatment plans. During potentially dangerous periods, patients are advised to limit their time outdoors, use air purifiers, and promptly take preventative medications at the first signs of illness.
