Israeli hospital becomes first outside US to access OpenAI medical models

Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer has become the first hospital outside the United States to have access to specialized medical models from artificial intelligence platform developer OpenAI.

A related strategic collaboration agreement was signed through ARC, the medical center’s innovation division.

In August, a Sheba delegation is scheduled to travel to OpenAI headquarters for a series of meetings with senior company officials.

The agreement covers OpenAI for Healthcare models, including ChatGPT Health, which launched in January of this year and are currently available to only a small number of hospitals in the United States. The model is intended for doctors and is intended to help in making decisions and drawing up treatment plans for patients based on all existing research. This is an encrypted and secure system created specifically for hospitals.

The collaboration will give Sheba physicians early access to cutting-edge AI models before they are publicly released, and will deepen the research partnership with OpenAI as part of the company’s healthcare program. As part of the collaboration, special working groups at the Israeli center will get acquainted with various stages of development, take part in global OpenAI events and develop internal applications adapted to work together with the system.

In addition, treatment protocols adopted at Sheba will be integrated into OpenAI models, which in the future will also make it possible to recommend treatment methods specifically adapted for Israel, taking into account its characteristics.

At the operational level, Sheba clinicians and researchers will be able to enter patient case reports and receive in return links to relevant studies and articles, as well as additional capabilities that support the clinical and daily work of healthcare staff. Each response received includes bibliographic references, scientific journal references, and publication dates, allowing the medical team to independently verify the research basis behind each recommendation.

The tools are integrated directly into the workflow of medical and scientific personnel and allow the introduction of AI capabilities into everyday practice. Sheba will also be able to integrate its own institutional knowledge—such as clinical protocols, pathways, and regulations—into the system so that responses reflect the hospital’s own established standards and procedures. The platform will also support administrative and operational processes and help reduce documentation burden and improve organizational efficiency.
