Hue Central Hospital set 3 records for organ transplantation

Hue Central Hospital set 3 records for organ transplantation within 48 hours, successfully performing transplant surgery on 8 patients.

On April 5, Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central said as above, adding that the organ transplants were performed from April 2-4, and the patient’s health after the transplant is stable.

During these three days, Hue Central Hospital consecutively conducted 3 trans-Vietnamese organ transplants, one autologous kidney transplant, and 4 blood-related kidney transplants on living donors. A total of 8 patients received organ transplants.

In the above eight transplant cases, for the first time, Hue Central Hospital received a trio of heart, liver, and kidney organs at the same time through Vietnam. The organ was donated by a brain-dead patient at Vietnam – Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. In previous trans-Vietnam transplant cases, Hue hospital received only one organ.

Also related to this organ donation case, Hue Central Hospital recorded a third record of longer organ transport time than previous organ transport cases. In the North, previous organ transplant donations were taken from local donors (brain dead patients at the hospital where organs were removed and transplanted), without pressure on organ transportation time. In the South, Cho Ray Hospital used to take organs from brain-dead donors in Vung Tau, more than 120 km from Ho Chi Minh City, more than 3 hours by car. At that time, the organs were escorted by traffic police to take them back to the city in time to be transplanted to the patient.

In this case, the geographical distance from Quang Ninh to Hue is more than 800 km. It took the organ transport team more than 4 hours and 30 minutes to bring the organs from Uong Bi Hospital to Hue Central Hospital. Tang was taken by ambulance to Noi Bai airport, took a flight to Phu Bai airport and was immediately transferred to the transplant hospital.

“A cross-Vietnam organ transplant from a brain-dead donor is always a magical journey,” Professor Hiep said, adding that this is a special mission, “even if geographical separation cannot stop the patient’s determination to win the patient’s life.” merciful to the hand of death”.

In 2020, Viet Duc University Hospital set a record for successfully transplanting 23 organs including 3 hearts, 4 livers, and 16 kidneys in two weeks. This is also the first time the hospital has transplanted hearts to two patients on two consecutive days.

In 2017, the Vietnam Records Organization also honored 17 organ transplant records in Vietnam.

Since 1992, the country has had 8,365 cases of organ transplants. Of these, only 6% of organs donated from brain dead people are from living donors. Experts believe that Vietnam is wasting organ donations from brain-dead donors, because every year about 7,000 people die in traffic accidents – potential organ donors.
