When the outbreak was first discovered in late March and in an effort to keep the milk supply safe, farmers were instructed to discard the milk of sick cows. The diagnosis of the disease is made using a PCR test from a nasal wash. The treatment, the effectiveness of which is still not entirely clear, must be given within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms and includes medications given to patients at risk of contracting the flu, including oral Tamiflu pills, inhaled Relanza, and an infusion of the drug Pramavir.
