Symptoms of thyroiditis

Glanditis at each stage has different symptoms such as weight gain or loss, loss of appetite, dry skin, hair loss, and decreased ability to concentrate.

Thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disorder. Among them, thyroiditis is one of the common thyroid diseases. Thyroiditis can occur in anyone but is more common in postpartum women, especially women 30-50 years old.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, Department of Endocrinology – Diabetes, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said thyroiditis can affect thyroid function leading to over or under production of thyroid hormones. . Symptoms of thyroiditis are divided according to disease stage and include:

Transient hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis).: This stage occurs when the thyroid gland becomes inflamed and releases too much hormone, causing temporary hyperthyroidism. Common symptoms include rapid heart rate, palpitations, loss of appetite, weight loss, anxiety, nervousness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, increased sweating and sensitivity to hot temperatures, tremors, and muscle weakness. ..

Normal phase: This phase occurs at two points. The first is when thyroid hormone levels return to normal levels after hyperthyroidism. Second, euthyroidism can occur in the final stage, after the hypothyroidism stage ends and the thyroid gland returns to a recovery state, maintaining normal hormones. At this stage there are usually no symptoms.

Hypothyroidism: After massive release of thyroid hormones for several weeks or months, the thyroid gland is depleted of hormones, leading to thyroid hormone deficiency causing hypothyroidism. At this stage, the body has vague signs that are easily forgotten such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, poor tolerance to cold, muscle weakness, decreased ability to concentrate… Patients often only develop symptoms. Appears when symptoms are severe, that is, severe hypothyroidism.

Thyroiditis has many different forms, including acute thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis and autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). Doctors treat depending on the type of disease and stage. If the patient has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it often causes permanent hypothyroidism, so they need to take thyroid hormone supplements for life. Patients need to have follow-up examinations as prescribed by the doctor to monitor their condition in order to adjust the appropriate amount of medication. Giving up treatment and continuing to buy prescription drugs without follow-up visits can cause dangerous health complications.

Dr. Truc recommends that people with unusual signs go to a medical facility for early examination and treatment (if any) to prevent complications. You should have health check-ups and check-ups more often, at least once a year.
