Prof. Erez Kakel recounts the operation that lasted all night: “Moshe came to us late at night sedated and on a ventilator after a long resuscitation that was carried out with dedication at the Ziv Medical Center in Safed and included, among other things, 13 electric shocks and the insertion of a balloon into the aorta, which allowed him to survive until the operation. Upon his arrival, the heart’s function was assessed Moshe’s by about 10% – a function that without emergency surgery is impossible to live with.” According to him, his chances of surviving such an event and such a complex operation were slim. Despite this – when he summoned the operating room team towards midnight, no one lingered. “Everyone came and rallied for the benefit of the attempt to save Moshe’s life. Thanks to the close cooperation with Dr. Mitsfat and the cardiology team at the medical center where he was treated, Moshe was transferred to surgery quickly and thus we were able to save his life.”
“The heart barely moves”
The professor adds that when the chest was opened in the operating room, the heart barely moved. “We were connected to the heart-lung machine within minutes and during CPR. After several hours of difficult and complex surgery, little by little the heart started working again, just like a miracle.” After two days, when the team noticed that the heart was indeed recovering, the balloon was removed and Moshe woke up. “We removed the breathing tube and 6 days later Moshe was already discharged home in excellent general condition with almost normal heart function. I am convinced that in time he will return to full function.”
Didi Marizen’ intensive care paramedic who carried out the transfer from the medical center to the North, says that “Moshe was in a state of arrhythmia of a type from which the chance of survival is very low. The fact that our intensive care vehicle equipped with a cardiac device was exactly in place, along with the twinning and connection with the North Medical Center And Prof. Kachel – who did everything quickly – made this medical miracle possible.”
Today Moshe feels as if he was reborn: “Thanks to Prof. Kachel I am alive. He didn’t give up on me, he fought for me until I got out of it. The team of the heart surgery department is full of humanity, love and compassion and I thank them for saving my life.”
