Biathlete Philipp Nawrath once again delivered a top performance at the World Cup in Hochfilzen, Austria, but missed his next podium finish. The 31-year-old cleared all ten targets in the sprint and finished eighth. After ten kilometers, Nawrath, third in the sprint at the start of the season in Kontiolahti, was 22 seconds behind the victorious Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bö.
The record world champion celebrated his 77th World Cup success despite a penalty loop and relegated his error-free teammate Sturla Holm Laegreid to second place with 4.2 seconds. The Frenchman Fabien Claude came third (0 errors/+ 6.8 seconds). Nawrath is therefore in a promising position in the pursuit on Saturday (2.45 p.m./ZDF and Eurosport).
“With a perfect shooting performance you can expect to be in the top six. It was a tough round today. My legs weren’t quite as fresh anymore. Nevertheless, I am completely satisfied,” said Nawrath on ZDF.
Things didn’t go so well for the other Germans: Only Justus Strelow (1/+ 59.6 seconds) made it into the top 20 in 17th place. Philipp Horn (2/+ 1:33.03 minutes) was 32nd, World Cup debutant Simon Kaiser (3/+ 1:43.7 minutes) crossed the finish line in 38th place. Johannes Kühn (4/+2:24.2 minutes) took 59th place and just made it into the pursuit race. This will take place without Danilo Riethmüller (5/+ 2:40.7 minutes), fourth in the mass start in Finland the previous week. He didn’t get past a disappointing 73rd place.
