World Athletics Championships: Hammer thrower Pawel Fajdek trumps Usain Bolt

Pawel Fajdek, a Polish hammer thrower, has won the world championship five times in a row, setting a record. The 33-year-old, who had won Olympic gold the previous year, outjumped his fellow countryman Wojciech Nowicki (81.03) in the final in Eugene/Oregon on Saturday. Eivind Henriksen of Norway won the bronze (80.87). In the 200 m, only the remarkable Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt had previously won four straight world championships (2009 to 2015 over 200 m). Tristan Schwandke, the German starter, was disqualified on Friday during the qualification round.

Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia won gold in the opening race at the World Championships. The Kenyan Hellen Obiri, the reigning champion, was edged out by the 29-year-old world record holder over 10,000 meters in a thrilling photo finish in 30:09.94 minutes (30:10.02). Margaret Kipkemboi, their countrywoman, received the bronze (30:10.07). Konstanze Klosterhalfen, the top runner in Germany, will only run over 5000 meters in Eugene. Over the course of the 25 stadium laps, no German athlete started.

Gesa Felicitas Krause, a steeplechaser, just makes it into the championship race.

Gesa Felicitas Krause, a two-time obstacle champion in Europe, narrowly missed out on a spot in the World Cup final. The 29-year-old Trier resident placed seventh in the second and incredibly fast race on Saturday morning local time in 9:21.02; with a lead of eight hundredths of a second, it was sufficient for the winning ticket.

The top six competitors from each of the three heats and the final, which will be held on Wednesday at 7.45 p.m. local time (4.45 a.m. CEST), all advanced. Krause remarked on ZDF, “I’m incredibly proud of the race, I can’t mobilize right now.

The World Cup qualifying performance by Lea Meyer was outstanding. The 24-year-old Cologne woman fell into the moat headfirst after only 400 meters when one of the obstacles she was running over caught in her spikes. She stood back up and came in eighth place in 9:30.81 minutes, missing out on the final. Meyer said, “I didn’t approach the hurdle forcefully enough,” which was why he fell so hard. That was annoying and foolish.

Norah Jeruto of Kenya, who was competing for Kazakhstan, finished the fastest with a time of 9:01.54. Krause had won bronze at the World Championships in 2015 in Beijing, 2019, and Doha. After falling in the final, she nevertheless maintained her best form in 2017 without winning a medal.

Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch failed to make the high jump championship.

Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch, who finished third at the European Championships, did not go to the high jump World Championships final. With a jump of 1.86 meters on Saturday, the 31-year-old set a season-best for himself, although he fell short of the top twelve. At the first World Championships in the USA, the hurdle sprinter Gregor Traber, the triple jumpers Neele Eckhardt-Noack and Jessie Maduka, and the triple jumper Neele Eckhardt-Noack all failed to advance to the next round with their performances.
