Athletico tries to maintain a taboo on Atlético-GO in the Copa do Brasil

Athletico face the Atlético-GO to maintain the taboo of always having qualified when facing Goiás in the Brazilian Cup.

This year, the clubs will face each other in the first leg of the fifth phase this Thursday (23), at 9:30 pm, at Arena da Baixada, in Curitiba. The return of the confrontation is scheduled for May 14th (also a Thursday), at 7pm, at Antônio Accioly, in Goiânia.

This will be the third time that the clubs have met in the history of the competition. Before 2026, the namesakes dueled in the 2007 and 2021 editions, and Furacão came out on top both times.

In the round of 16 of the 2007 Copa do Brasil, the team from Paraná managed to qualify due to the old criterion of away goals. In the first leg, held at Serra Dourada, in Goiânia, Dragão won 3-1. Colombian David Ferreira opened the scoring for the Paraná team, but saw the team beaten with goals from midfielder Anaílson and defenders Gilson and Roni.

At the Arena da Baixada, Furacão managed to advance with a 2-0 victory, with goals from former striker Alex Mineiro, from a penalty, and from right-back Jancarlos, who died at the age of 30, in 2013, in a car accident on Rodovia Washington Luiz, in Rio de Janeiro. At the time, he was returning to Natividade (RJ), his hometown, and was going to sign a contract to play for Duque de Caxias.

In 2021, the clash also took place in the round of 16. The difference is that the trip took place in Curitiba, with a 2-1 victory for Paraná. Uruguayan midfielder David Terans opened the scoring and saw striker Zé Roberto equalize for the Goiás, but he shone again and decided the triumph with a goal in the 39th minute of the second half.

In the return game, Athletico managed to qualify with a 2-2 draw. Furacão took the lead twice, with goals from midfielder Christian, currently at Cruzeiro, and striker Renato Kayzer, who plays for Vitória, while Atlético-GO scored with Zé Roberto (a player who is at Sport) and defender Éder (at Ceará).

Furacão will participate in the Copa do Brasil for the 30th time

Athletico has played 166 games in the Copa do Brasil, with 70 wins, 51 draws and 45 defeats. In addition, there are 254 goals scored and 187 conceded. Champion in 2019, the club also reached the final in 2021, but ended up defeated by Atlético-MG.

In the last 10 years, Furacão has never stopped being in the round of 16, having been eliminated in the quarterfinals in the last four seasons (Corinthians, in 2025; Vasco, in 2024; Flamengo, in 2023 and 2022). The last time Furacão fell in a preliminary phase was in 2015, when they ended up being defeated by Tupi in the second phase (after beating Remo in their debut).
