Draw for the Basketball World Cup: Good luck for the German women

The German basketball players got into a detachable preliminary group at the home World Cup in Berlin. National coach Olaf Lange’s team will initially face Spain, Japan and Mali at the World Cup from September 4th to 13th. This was the result of the draw at the power plant in Berlin. The games will be played in the Berlin Arena and the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The tickets were drawn by Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson, former German handball star Stefan Kretzschmar and German breakdance champion Jilou.

The German team wants to compete for medals in its first World Cup participation in 28 years. In Satou and Nyara Sabally, Leonie Fiebich, Luisa Geiselsöder and Frieda Bühner, five players in the USA are currently active in the WNBA. A German selection has never been so good.

Nowitzki has a lot of confidence in the German team

Germany’s basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki also believes that the German team can play a good role. “The goal definitely has to be the quarter-finals. And then you have to see how they stand in the tournament. I think they definitely don’t have to hide,” said Nowitzki before the draw. “If you allow yourself to be carried away by the euphoria a little bit, then more can happen.”

The four group winners qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The second and third teams play the other four quarter-final lists in a preliminary knockout round. There is definitely a lot of interest in the home World Cup. According to the German Basketball Association, more than 76,000 tickets have already been sold for the games. The tickets for the final weekend on September 12th and 13th are particularly popular. More than 80 percent of the tickets for the two semi-finals, the game for third place and the final are already sold out.
