The Spanish rally driver Alejandro Cachón, from the Toyota Gazoo Racing Spain and MSi Racing Team, with the support of Repsol, acknowledged being “very happy” and “satisfied” with his “job well done” in the Canary Islands Rally, moving away from the “pressure” of already being one of the great national hopes in the national motorsport and without worrying about the “future” in the World Rally Championship (WRC), because it is still “early” for that.
“I’m very happy. In the end, when you do a job well done and you’re satisfied with what you’ve done, you have to be happy and content, and that’s how I am,” said the Asturian in an interview with Europa Press minutes before standing on the podium of the 50th edition of the Canary Islands.
Cachón adjusts his overalls with the Repsol logo and puts on his cap in that typical gesture of a motorsport driver. He looks tired, but a smile quickly appears on his face. He has just secured second place in the WRC2 category, standing on the podium in front of more than a hundred people in this town in the southeast of the island of more than 33,000 inhabitants.
“Racing here in the Canary Islands is always special. The truth is that the fans are very encouraging. I love the stages, this type of asphalt is incredible,” celebrates Cachón, who with this valuable second place rises to sixth position in the WRC2 general classification and third in the WRC2 Challenger.
Furthermore, the drivers were able to delight some 25,000 people on Thursday and Friday, finishing both days on a small circuit installed in the Gran Canaria Stadium, home of UD Las Palmas. “We have done it once again. It’s fun, people can see it up close, so it’s good for the fans,” said the Asturian.
Cachón is one of the rally stars of the future, and the Spanish fans know that there is a diamond that is already shining, as he demonstrated with his second place in the Canary Islands, mirroring last year’s result. “I don’t put pressure on myself with that, I put pressure on myself to do my best, work as hard as possible and give my all,” he said.
For this reason, in addition, although in 2027 there will be a change in regulations and it seems that more cars will be in the WRC category, it is still “early” to talk about ‘promoting’ to the first category. “I prefer to be focused 100% on the rallies that come this season and not worry about what will come in the future,” he said, although he knows that he has “the two” qualities that a ‘top’ rally driver should have: being skilled and fast.
A “VERY HARD” RALLY IN THE CANARY ISLANDS
Once the penultimate day and its six stages concluded, Cachón spoke to the Spanish media who traveled to Las Palmas to analyze a rally that was “very tough” due to the changing weather conditions. “In the morning we woke up to rain that we didn’t expect, we didn’t have the car adapted for it,” he said about what he experienced on Saturday.
This generated “a little stress in the morning” in the team, always accompanied by his co-driver Borja Rozada and “with wheels that sometimes were not the ones that were touching.” But his talent in a rally in which he is comfortable allowed him to take second place ahead of Frenchman Eric Camilli (Skoda).
And the Asturian wanted to be fighting for victory in this rally in Spain, but the power of the Lancia engine surprised them from the beginning, and it was very difficult to get close to fellow Frenchman Yohan Rossel, who always had a good income. “Victory is honestly very far away. I focus more on trying to maintain second place, which is a goal that I want to achieve and it is the best result we can achieve,” Cachón stated then.
The next event for Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada will be the Rally of Portugal, from May 7 to 10, the first gravel event they will compete this season and the third scoring event for the Asturian, who has only participated and scored points in Croatia and the Canary Islands.
