Brazilian has official departure from UFC after bad streak

The Brazilian had already announced his retirement after being knocked out by Mike Mallot in his last fight, which took place on April 18, in Winnipeg. At 39 years old, he regretted the defeat and said that this was not how he wanted to say goodbye to the public. Even with the negative result, he was applauded by the audience.

“I think I had a great career. I wanted to win so much, but I think that’s it, I think it’s over. I’m happy, I’ve always tried to challenge myself and I’ve never said no to a fight”, he declared, before welcoming his family to the Octagon.

Last Tuesday (28), the UFC made Durinho’s retirement official by definitively ending his contract. The fighter himself confirmed the information on social media and thanked him for the chance to be part of Ultimate.

“It was incredible! 12 years, 25 fights and five main events! Thank you, UFC and all the fans”he wrote on his profile on X (formerly Twitter).

UFC career and future

Burns joined the UFC in July 2014 and debuted with a unanimous decision victory over Andreas Stahl. The first defeat took more than a year to happen; he was defeated by Rashid Magomedov, also in a unanimous decision.

His best phase took place between September 2017 and May 2020, a period in which he had nine fights and suffered only one defeat. This put him in the position of challenging for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title in February 2021. Durinho, however, was defeated by knockout in the third round.

After that, his career entered a rather difficult phase; there were nine more fights, with only three victories. The Brazilian was defeated by younger names in the last five duels in a row.

Now, with his retirement made official, Gilbert has plans to open his own gym for fighters, in addition to continuing with his YouTube channel.
