Vor a few years ago, Kai Havertz said that as a teenager he treated himself to a luxury item after his breakthrough with the professionals at Bayer Leverkusen. Like so many footballers, he bought a designer backpack: “White with gold, very eye-catching,” Havertz told him Guardian. Looking back, he admitted that he “perhaps wanted to seem a little cool” back then. However, the Aachen native quickly realized that demonstrative pomp didn’t suit him: “I couldn’t take myself seriously with it.” After a conversation with his parents, he felt his assessment was confirmed. If he had changed, they would have warned him: “Kai, that’s not you, stop it!” To this day, the only thing that glitters about Havertz is his collection of titles.
