Application for the Summer Games: ARD: Steinmeier no longer opposes the 2036 Olympics in Germany

At the beginning of the year, Steinmeier rejected the 2036 Olympic Games in Germany for historical reasons: in 1936, exactly 100 years earlier, National Socialist Germany hosted the Summer Games. The Nazis unrestrainedly misused the games for their propaganda. Therefore, the Federal President initially only welcomed possible Olympic Games and Paralympics in Germany in 2040 or 2044.

Steinmeier now told the ARD program “Report from Berlin”: “We have great sports facilities. We have a sports-loving population. I really hope that the Olympic Games will finally take place in Germany again after Munich in 1972. The fact that we are good hosts of major sporting events has been remembered by the world since the summer fairy tale of 2006.” 20 years ago the World Cup took place in Germany.

Decision on German applicants in September

According to the report, DOSB board chairman Otto Fricke said that he always understood Steinmeier to personally favor the 2040 or 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany, but did not rule out an application for 2036. “The DOSB is therefore all the more pleased that this has now been made explicitly clear,” emphasized Fricke. Broad political support for the application is extremely important on the international stage.

The last Olympic Games to date in Germany took place in Munich in the summer of 1972. Now Munich as well as Berlin and the Rhine-Ruhr region want to run for the Summer Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. Hamburg withdrew its candidacy after it was rejected in a referendum. The German Olympic Sports Confederation will decide in September which national applicant it will send into the race.

The 2028 Summer Games have been assigned to Los Angeles, and Brisbane in Australia will be the host in 2032. For 2036, Asia is considered promising for the award by the International Olympic Committee, and India and Qatar have expressed interest.
