Brazilian team cuts player before the World Cup after 20 years; remember others

The news of the right-back’s cut Wesley due to an injury suffered during the friendly against Egypt shook the players of the Brazilian team. However, this is not the first time that a player has left the squad due to an injury suffered days before his World Cup debut.

Since FIFA allowed the exchange of entries in 1970, Brazil has cut at least one player in ten World Cups. The last time, however, was in 2006, when Edmilson, from Barcelona, suffered an injury to the lateral meniscus of his knee in Germany. The Mineiro midfielder, from São Paulo, took his place.

The first change in the squad was before the tri campaign in 1970, with the departure of goalkeeper Emerson Leão, from Palmeiras, replacing striker Rogério, from Botafogo. The most emblematic cuts were those of striker Romário, in 1998, due to a calf injury, and midfielder and captain Emerson, four years later, due to a collarbone injury suffered during training.

There were still cases of players being cut due to injury during the World Cup, but without replacements. Forward Neymar received a knee in the back and was left out of the historic 7-1 defeat suffered by Brazil in 2014 against Germany. In the last World Cup, left-back Alex Telles and striker Gabriel Jesus were absent after the start of the competition.

Wesley, Roma’s right-back, was injured during the Brazilian team’s friendly against Egypt, last Saturday (6), in Cleveland, in the United States. The player left the field with difficulty walking and was found to have a muscle injury that will sideline him for around 40 days.

With the loss of Wesley, coach Carlo Ancelotti called up midfielder Éderson, from Atalanta, for the vacancy. In this way, Brazil has only Danilo in the position, who is a right-back by origin, and has played as a defender.

In addition to him, Ibañez, another of those called up for defense, can also play as a right-back. On the left side, Douglas Santos, from Zenti, and veteran Alex Sandro, from Flamengo, compete for the position.
