It remains to be seen whether Eriksen will continue his career. “Christian has to answer that. I don’t know. I think it’s absolutely legitimate to ask. But I don’t know,” said Danish sports director Peter Möller. Discussions between Eriksen and VfL Wolfsburg were actually planned this week as to whether he could imagine staying with the Volkswagen club after relegation to the Bundesliga.

Möller also announced special measures for the players. “We will ensure that no one goes home alone. They either go with their parents, family or as a group,” the official said. In the coming days, coach Brian Riemer wants to call each player to inquire about their well-being.

Former clubs are also reacting

After the Wolfsburg team (“We are thinking of you, Christian”), other former clubs of the Danish record national player also reacted. “The club sends strength and best regards to Christian and the Eriksen family as we wait for further news,” Manchester United said in a statement.

Tottenham Hotspur also wrote on social media: “Our thoughts are with Christian Eriksen and his family. We wish you a full and speedy recovery, Christian. We are all with you.”
