Football World Cup: This is what World Cup day brings: opening ceremony in the Aztec Stadium

The largest soccer World Cup in history opens on Thursday (9 p.m.) in the legendary Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. The game between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa is the first of 104 games in the XXL tournament. 48 teams are taking part in the sporting mega event instead of the previous 32; the USA and Canada are the other hosts. Before the opening game, there are concerns about security in Mexico City due to violent teacher protests. There is also a threat of storms.

The games of the World Cup day

9 p.m. (ZDF and MagentaTV): Mexico – South Africa – For the third time after 1970 and 1986, Mexico is hosting a World Cup. Coach Javier Aguirre’s team is the favorite in Group A. South Africa returns to football’s biggest stage 16 years after the home tournament.

What else is happening?

The big opening show is scheduled to start 90 minutes before kick-off of the game in Mexico. Pop star Shakira will perform the official World Cup song “Dai Dai” live for the first time together with co-singer Burna Boy. Artists such as Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs and Alejandro Fernández will also perform. FIFA announced a “celebration of football, music and culture”.
