Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton won the Formula 1 sprint qualifying in Silverstone, England on Friday. In front of the home crowd, the Brit took pole position for the sprint on Saturday (1 p.m./live ORF 1, Sky) with the best lap time of 1:28.376 minutes, just ahead of the Italian World Championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes (+0.011 seconds). Behind them were Red Bull star Max Verstappen (+0.321) and Charles Leclerc (+0.327) in the second Ferrari.
“I love this place, I love these fans. I can’t express what a big dream this is,” explained Hamilton beaming after the work was done. “The car was great today. We’re pushing everything to the maximum. This pole here is great.” The lead is very narrow, but he will try to leave the competition behind on Saturday too, said the 41-year-old.
Ferrari star dominates Friday
The record world champion had already achieved the best time in the only free practice session for the British Grand Prix. He also set the fastest lap in all three parts of the sprint qualifying, fueling the English Formula 1 fans’ hopes of a home victory. “It won’t always go the way it does here now, but to come to Silverstone and perform like this here is a great surprise. I’m totally thrilled,” said Hamilton, who is a record winner on his home track with nine successes.
The British Mercedes driver and World Championship runner-up George Russell (+0.357) had to settle for fifth place at home on Friday. The world champion team from McLaren couldn’t keep up with the pace at the front, last year’s winner Lando Norris (+0.364) and Oscar Piastri (+0.396) ended up in sixth and seventh place. Meanwhile, your team boss Zak Brown announced an engine upgrade that should close the gap to the top at the Belgian Grand Prix in two weeks. “We will catch up,” said Brown at Silverstone. “I believe we will win races this year, so I am quite optimistic about the future.”
The 100 km competition on Saturday is the fourth sprint race in this World Championship season. The drivers then complete qualifying (5 p.m.) for the British Grand Prix. This goes on stage on Sunday at 4 p.m. Antonelli is 40 points ahead of his teammate Russell and 46 points ahead of Hamilton in the World Championship standings with 171 points.
