Football World Cup: Despite the goal drought: Morocco coach praises offensive ace Díaz

Morocco’s national coach Mohamed Ouahbi defended his attacking star Brahim Díaz, who was scoreless at this World Cup, before the round of 16 against Canada. “That’s always the problem with big players: We expect more and more from them and are very demanding of them,” said the 49-year-old before the game in Houston on Saturday (7 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV). Díaz “doesn’t have to be the game changer every single day.”

Díaz has yet to score a goal in the Moroccans’ four games at the tournament so far. But he was “very happy” with the two assists from the 26-year-old from Real Madrid, said Ouahbi. He also praised Díaz for his defensive work. “He is one of our best players,” said the coach about the top scorer in the Africa Cup last winter.

Morocco, the fourth-placed team in the 2022 World Cup, finished the group stage with seven points from three games and then beat the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 16. Ouahbi demanded that his team had to improve against Canada. “The level we showed in the first few games will not be enough to win this game,” he said.
