The Government grants the Plate of Honor of the Order of Civil Merit to the men’s and women’s teams

At its meeting this Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved the granting of the Plaque of Honor of the Order of Civil Merit to the Spanish men’s teams, both current world champions.

“The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports -Milagros Tolón-, has approved the granting of the Plaque of Honor of the Order of Civil Merit to the Spanish men’s and women’s soccer team,” said the minister spokesperson for the Executive, Elma Saiz, in the press conference after the Council of Ministers.

The head of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration highlighted the “brilliant victory” of the team coached by Luis de la Fuente against Argentina in the World Cup final between the United States, Mexico and Canada. “In this room you can read ‘Values of Spain’. I think that few words better represent those values that our team has given us during this World Cup. And we were able to see it with millions of Spaniards on the streets of Madrid or following it from their homes,” he said.

For this reason, the Government grants this recognition to the men’s team, which earned its second star 16 years later, and to the women’s team, current world champion after winning its first title in 2023. “A recognition of an achievement that undoubtedly transcends sports and that projects values such as perseverance, effort, sacrifice, collaboration, respect, tolerance and talent, above all, to society,” he listed.

“Spain is making history again, becoming the only country in the world whose men’s and women’s teams have won a soccer World Cup, consolidating our country as an international reference on and off the field of play, because that is one of the keys,” Saiz added.

For the minister, ‘La Roja’ “has given an example to the world of the value of a team, they have shown great talent, but, above all, camaraderie and solidarity, a way of competing that transcends sport and that also speaks of the values that represent us as a country.” “An open and diverse Spain, which leads a clean, sustainable energy transition,” he continued.

“A Spain that attracts visitors and exports talent through culture. Spain is a country of values and this group of footballers are the best example of this. Thank you for making us dream again, for never giving up and for showing that talent always finds reward. Congratulations, champions,” concluded the minister.
