Anthony Joshua opens up about fatal crash – “It hurts”

It will be Joshua’s first fight since two of his close friends and teammates died in a tragic crash in Nigeria in December.

Sina Ghami and Latif ”Latz” Ayodele were killed when a car collided with a stationary truck near Lagos in December last year. Joshua, who was traveling in the same car, only survived with minor injuries.

Joshua said BBC:llenot yet ready to fully process the death of his friends.

“It’s tough. Every time I think about it, it hurts. I’m not ready to let it sink in,” Joshua told the BBC.

Ghami worked as Joshua’s fitness coach for over ten years. Ayodele was Joshua’s longtime friend and personal trainer. Just hours before the accident, Joshua had posted a video on Instagram of him playing table tennis with Ayodele.

Joshua admitted to the BBC that he was a little nervous ahead of his comeback fight.

“It’s about competing at the highest level. I want to succeed for my team, make them proud and make myself proud,” Joshua said.

Joshua the previous competitive match ended in a knockout loss to the IBF world champion Daniel Dubois’lle at London’s Wembley in September 2024. After that, Joshua knocked out the American boxer-turned-social media star Jake Paulin just ten days before the fatal crash.

The long-awaited British super match is also waiting in the background Tyson Furya against. The fight is expected to take place in November if both Joshua and Fury win their next fights.

Fury will face Poland on Friday Mariusz Wachin in Thailand. Joshua still doesn’t want to look past Prenga.

“I’m not discounting Prenga. This fight is a big deal for me,” Joshua said.

The Sporting News estimates Joshua’s career match fees to be around 275 million dollars, or roughly around 235 million euros.
