Former footballer and coach Roberto Mancini will once again be Italy coach, replacing Gennaro Gattuso, who failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and Claudio Ranieri was appointed as the new technical director, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced this Tuesday on its official ‘X’ account.

His appointment puts an end to a long election process in which the names of the Spanish Pep Guardiola, the Brazil coach, Carlos Ancelotti, and Andrea Pirlo, whose candidacy was ruled out due to his direct connection with a Russian betting house, were considered.
Roberto Mancini led the ‘Nazionale’ between 2018 and 2023, a stage in which they won the 2020 Euro Cup, held in the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he failed to qualify Italy for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In 2023, he terminated his contract to coach the Saudi Arabia national team, a position he held for one year.
During his time as a club coach, Mancini won three Serie A titles, two Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups as head of Inter Milan; two other Italian Cups with Fiorentina; a Premier League, an FA Cup and an English Super Cup with Manchester City; a Turkish Cup with Galatasaray; and the Qatar league with his last club, Al-Sadd.
For his part, the veteran former coach of Valencia, among other clubs, Claudio Ranieri led Leicester City to win the ‘Premier League’ title in 2016 and his last position was at the helm of Roma in the 2024-25 season.
Mancini will make his debut against Belgium in the first match of the Nations League on September 25, where, apart from sharing a group with ‘The Red Devils’, he will face France, which made public this Tuesday the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as coach, and Türkiye.
The president of the Italian Football Federation, Giovanni Malagò, announced that Mancini and Ranieri will be presented at a press conference this Wednesday.
