Jorge Messi was not only the father of a football superstar, butć and his first coach and the man who guided his career for years. He followed Lionel’s first football steps in the Grandoli club, and later took on the role of his agent and participated in key business decisions during his career in Barcelona, PSG and Inter Miami.

We are transcribing Messi’s letter in its entirety:

“Dad, I still can’t believe that you’re gone. I can’t accept it, that is, I don’t want to accept it. It’s very hard for me to imagine that we won’t see you again, that we won’t talk anymore. I know you suffered and that it’s the best this way, but you left too soon. We still had so much to enjoy together.

You urged me so much to play in the last World Cup, and it was just a few days before its start that your condition worsened the most. It was the first time that you won’t be in a big tournament, but my mom told me that you will get better and that you will recover enough to be able to travel. I told you that we would make it to the final so that you could travel.

After every game č I was waiting for your message and I missed it. Then I realized that the situation was really serious. Despiteč to that, I didn’t stop thinking about getting as far as possible, to buy you time so that you could see at least one game. We made it to the finals and you couldn’t be there.

I wanted to win it to bring you a trophy and show you another one. I didn’t succeed, my legs couldn’t do it anymore. This time I tried to go against my own body, but I couldn’t. I didn’t manage to feel good at all.

When I arrived, you thought we had lost the final on penalties. We couldn’t talk about anything that happened. You couldn’t even enjoy anything. We didn’t become champions, but you have no idea how much we enjoyed every single game. You were right once again: I had to be there and play.

I’m telling you this because it’s the only thing we couldn’t talk about, since everything else was already you know We talked every day and saw each other whenever we could, as much as my commitments allowed. I don’t know what I’ll do without you, I don’t know how to continue. All my life I have only played football, and now I have a lot of doubts about whether I will continue to play it for a long time.

You were with me from the very beginning, and so little is left until the end. Why couldn’t you hold on just long enough for us to end up together? I know that your happiness was to see your family well, your wife, your children, and above all, although you didn’t want others to know it, to watch me play…

It’s been like that since I was little. You took me to all the training sessions and would come home from work. My mom took me to many because you were working. Of course, you didn’t miss a single game. How much you suffered while looking at me and how much you enjoyed it, even though you never gave me too many compliments. You were a dad, a friend and a representative.

You were always exactly the person I needed at a certain moment and you were never wrong. Apart from a few objections or arguments, you were always right. In the end it would always turn out exactly as you said.

I will miss you a lot, but you will always be present, especially in the upbringing of my children, because I raise them and raise them the way you two raised me. Rest in peace and protect us from above as you protected us here.

Thank you for everything. I love you, dad.”
