Johannes Liebmann won European Championship gold in the 800 meter freestyle. The 19-year-old came out ahead of his national teammate Sven Schwarz and Zalan Sarkany from Hungary. Liebmann clocked in at 7:37.59 minutes, improving his European record from April 12th by 0.35 seconds. His lead over second place was 3.57 seconds.

For Liebmann, his first European championship on the long track is the greatest success of his career so far. He also won the heats on Tuesday. “I approached it relatively quickly so as not to take any risks,” said Liebmann afterwards.

For Schwarz it is also the first medal at a long track European Championships. The long-distance expert from Hanover is already vice world champion in the 800 and 1500 meter freestyle.
