Bundesliga: WSG Tirol celebrates a shooting festival in Lustenau

The WSG was the more dangerous team from the start in the pouring rain in front of 4,219 spectators. The new Rapid loanee Moritz Oswald impressed on the left wing. Phillip Böhm, who made his Bundesliga debut in place of the suspended Domenik Schierl in the Lustenau goal, had to intervene after just two minutes against Baden Frederiksen. He narrowly missed a pass from Olakigbe in the penalty area (21′).

Baden Frederiksen, whom WSG coach Philipp Semlic had called up at the front line this time instead of Lukas Hinterseer, also had his legs in the game when the lead was taken: The Dane held his own against Danilo Soares on the right, and Olakigbe, who was free in the center, used Husein Balic’s deflected cross with a volley. Balic almost made it 2-0 two minutes later. After Niklas Pertlwieser made a mistake, the winger Böhm over-dribbled, but only hit the side netting from an acute angle. On the other side, WSG goalie Salko Hamzic and the bar combined to parry a direct corner (45th+1).

After the break, the WSG made things clear. First, Baden Frederiksen, who was deployed by Olakigbe, scored with a well-considered left-footed shot into the far corner. After an hour, Striednig also used a corner from Thomas Goiginger with a header there. But that’s not all: After Böhm failed to defend his fist and hit opponent Drew Murray on the head, the video assistant (VAR) decided that a penalty was awarded. Baden Frederiksen scored safely.

The WSG professional Raphael Gschösser, who had been substituted seconds earlier, hit the crossbar with a dropkick after a corner (79th). Precious Benjamin and Seydou Diarra missed Lustenau’s best opportunity to score a consolation goal with a double chance (82′). After a 5-1 win at TSV Hartberg in October 2022, the Watteners achieved the second-highest Bundesliga away win in their history. They have now won four of the last five upper house appearances in Lustenau.

For the Lustenau team, who had recently impressed in a 1-1 draw at Sturm Graz, it was a bitter setback. Up to that point, Vorarlberg had not lost a home game this season. Across all competitions, they had only suffered one defeat in the last 20 competitive games in their own stadium – in March in the 2nd league against Vienna (0:3). The promoted team failed to score for the first time in the fifth league game of the season.
