Alberto González wins the Tongyeong World Cup

The Spanish triathlete Alberto González achieved victory this Saturday in the Triathlon World Cup event held in Tongyeong (South Korea), a success that joins that achieved in the same competition in Hong Kong (China) in March 2024.

The 28-year-old from Malaga, who was third last week in the World Cup in Beijing, crossed the finish line seven seconds ahead of the Swiss Max Studer, winner of the event in the Chinese capital, while the American Keller Norland completed the podium of the day. Also Spanish, David Castro finished fourth, 23 seconds behind his compatriot.

“I have gone hard from the beginning, I have not been afraid. As soon as I got off the bike, I put on my shoes and pushed forward without looking back, and it seems that the strategy has worked. I am very happy to have achieved victory today,” González confessed after the test.

In a race marked by rain, González was in a group of nine triathletes, led by the Hungarian Márk Dévay, first out of the water, who led the race in the cycling section, with the chasing group about 20 seconds away.

Along with the Andalusian there were other regular triathletes in the getaways, such as the Americans Chase McQueen and Seth Rider and the Frenchman Jules Rethoret, or Ben Dijkstra, who has gone from competing with Great Britain to competing with the Netherlands.

González was the first to make the transition at the five-kilometer run, leaving behind the chasing group, led by Studer, and attacking during the first of the two laps. Although the Swiss made a great comeback, he could not reach the level of the Spaniard, who crossed the finish line seven seconds ahead.

For her part, China’s Xinyu Lin achieved her second victory in the World Cup in the midst of intense rain and topped a podium in which she was accompanied by her compatriot Anqi Huang and the French Mathilde Gautier.
