Previously criticism from Ukraine: Russia welcomes controversial awarding of the World Weightlifting Championships

Criticism from Ukraine

On Sunday, on the sidelines of the current World Championships in China, the world association IWF announced that it wanted to host the World Cup in Moscow in 2030. This decision was immediately criticized in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.

“Our athletes will not go to Moscow,” announced Ukrainian Sports Minister Matviy Bidnyj after the decision was announced. He described the award to Moscow as a “worrying and unacceptable signal.” Bidnyj assumes that no self-respecting country will send its athletes to this World Cup.

Despite the war, IOC gradually lifted sanctions

After the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and numerous world associations excluded Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions or only admitted them as neutral athletes. Several world associations and also the IOC gradually lifted these sanctions despite Ukrainian protests.
