Over 70 dead in 45 years: That’s how dangerous the Dakar Rally is

The Frenchman risked taking part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice. On January 14, 1986 he died at the Dakar – in a helicopter crash.

Whoever starts at the Dakar often fulfills a lifelong dream. This is especially true for the many privateers who put all their savings into the project without even the slightest chance of winning. Everyone is aware that the Dakar is (life) dangerous, especially if you take part on a motorcycle. The most prominent fall victims were Fabrizio Meoni (ITA/2005) and Paulo Gonçalves (POR/2020).
