Thrilling debut for Gu, the Chinese freestyle star

A thrilling debut at the Olympics for Gu Ailing Eileen, China’s highly anticipated freestyle star. The 18-year-old born and raised in San Francisco in 2019 decided to represent her mother’s country, Chinese, at the Games and her beautiful face appears on billboards across the country as a testimonial for Victoria’s Secret, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Gucci.

At the Games he aims to win three medals but his dream threatened to fade due to the loss of a ski in the second run caused by the strong wind in the Big Air qualifiers. Gu then recovered and in the third test broke the pass for the final with the fifth score out of 12.

The beautiful skier has already won eight competitions and in 2021 she won two golds and a bronze at the 2021 X Games in Colorado. In China, the popularity of the “Snow Princess” goes beyond sport, also thanks to the choice of opting for the Asian national team and to be a role model for Chinese girls.

Although speaking in Mandarin and boasting 1.23 million followers on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter does not feel it has any role in the dispute between the US and China: “I jump on an icy track, it’s not political. When I’m in the United States, I’m American, but when I’m in China, I’m Chinese”, Eileen loves to repeat, who grew up with her single mother and grandmother in the exclusive Sea neighborhood Cliff of San Francisco.

And in fact, she has never put her weight on sensitive issues such as the repression of Uighurs, Hong Kong or Taiwan, nor has she ever revealed her citizenship. In Beijing, the 18-year-old also targeted a medal in the halfpipe and slopestyle.
