Imanol Rojo roza el ‘Top 20’ en skiathlon 15x15Km

Postponed the descent of Adur Etxezarreta due to the wind

The Spanish cross-country skier Imanol Rojo has finished the 15x15Km skiathlon event in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in twenty-first position, a result that represents the best mark of a Spaniard in the modality and the best position of the Tolosa in an event olympic

After the mass start at the Zhangjiakou National Cross-Country Ski Center, the rider from Tolosa went from less to more in a test in which the participants faced half the race (15km) in classic style and then changed their skis and did the remaining 15 km in freestyle.

Rojo passed 26th at the halfway point and was about to finish in the ‘Top 20’, but the Andorran Ireneu Esteve beat him by a second in the final sprint.

In this way, the Gipuzkoan long-distance runner, who will still participate in the 15 km classic and 50 km free events, finished with a time of 1:21:09 to 4:59 behind the winner, surpassing his best position in the Games, 33rd place in 50 kilometers in Sochi 2014.

The gold medal went to the Russian Alexander Bolshunov, who stopped the clock with a mark of 1:16:09 to lead a podium in which he was accompanied by his compatriot Denis Spitsov (1:17:20) and the Finn Iivo Niskanen ( 1:18:10), silver and bronze respectively.

POSTPONED THE DESCENT OF ADUR ETXEZARRETA

For his part, the Navarrese Adur Etxezarreta, who was expected to inaugurate the Spanish participation in the Games, could not compete due to the postponement of the alpine ski downhill test due to weather conditions.

The strong gusts of wind recorded at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Center throughout the morning have forced the start of the competition to be delayed up to three times.

However, the wind has not stopped and taking into account the forecast for the rest of the day, the International Ski Federation has decided to suspend the test and relocate it on the calendar, placing it this Monday at 5:00 Spanish peninsular time.

The rescheduling of this test has caused two more movements in the calendar for Monday. Thus, the first heat of the women’s giant slalom in which Nuria Pau competes, which was to start at 3:15 p.m. peninsular time, will be brought forward 45 minutes and will start at 2:30 p.m. peninsular time, while the second heat will be held at 7:30 a.m. instead of at 6.45.
