US Open 2023, Berrettini withdrew due to injury: what happened

Matteo Berrettini forced to retire due to injury in the second round of the US Open men’s singles. The blue, on the score of 6-4, 5-3 in favor of the French Arthur Rinderknech, on 40-40 injured his right ankle. The Roman, running towards the left side of the field, fell disastrously: his right foot planted on the ground and his ankle suffered an unnatural twist. The Roman, in tears, was forced to leave the field.

At the time of retirement, Berrettini was behind in scoring. In the first set, the blue risked going down in the sixth game and in the eighth game: after annulling 5 overall break points, the Italian gave up his serve at 5-4, giving away the first fraction to Rinderknech. The French accelerated in the sixth game of the second set (4-2) wasting 3 set points on 5-3 before the anticipated and unfortunate epilogue for the Capitoline.
