A media misstep in the Thiem house

There are many reasons for the son’s sporting crisis, one of which is that he has gotten used to a protective posture when hitting the forehand. Which is kind of obvious given the wrist injury.

The rest is speculation. And there lies the point. After the bankruptcies at the Challenger tournaments in Székesfehérvár and Zadar Nothing was heard from Thiem, it was only on Wednesday that he announced that his wrist was hurting (why so late?).

Because the media had to rely on speculation due to the sparse information (the number of international TV stations in Székesfehérvár, for example, is rather manageable) (most of them even held back), Moritz Thiem’s all-round blow in the chat group with almost all tennis journalists is Landes – to put it benevolently – was dispensable.

Here is his general criticism verbatim: “You should think about what he has achieved and the incredible reach he has given your articles. And now you only write negative things and mostly untruths, without exception. That’s just a bottomless impudence and just bad.”

Well, if Dominic Thiem only wins three games against an undoubtedly talented but little-known Salzburg player, people will generally hold back on cheering. But it’s about something else, not even about the fact that Thiem was (quite rightly) elevated to heaven by the media for years.

Supporter for years

Some media, including KURIER, have been following Thiem since he was 10 or 11 years old. A few media outlets were betting on Thiem’s stock because they suspected that something big was emerging in the media. And Thiem himself benefited from this for a long time. Media attention creates interest that partners and sponsors did not want to miss.

If the 30-year-old wants to make it to the top again, he has to break away from the family oasis of well-being. Ex-coach Günter Bresnik who was once primarily responsible for Thiem’s rise, repeatedly emphasizes that it is not productive to combine private and professional environments to such an extent. Thiem needs new impulses at all levels; must be able to torture himself again in training like he used to. And press chief Moritz Thiem should say: It’s only bad when no one reports anymore.
